There was a girl with a curl in her hair

I've been wanting to try sponge rollers in Rory's hair (which is as stubbornly straight as possible). Rory was pretty excited - she thought that the curlers were like hairbows and we would leave them in. She was quite disappointed when I told her she couldn't wear them to gymnastics. The curlers weren't totally successful. She had some curls when I took them out, but I need some help fixing it, and it was humid enough outside that they had completely fallen out by the time we arrived at gymnastics class. If anyone with little girls has any good suggestions, leave me a comment!


I think she was a tad excited.


Mommy clearly doesn't know what to do with curls.

Hmm...I grew up in the very humid South and Mom always did 'pin curls' in my hair. I had short, thick stick straight hair. To get it to stay, I would have to sleep in them - very uncomfortable! Maybe if you get Rory's in the Bobby pins you could mist them and blow dry them??

I have been curling Emma's hair (which is straight as can be) with my curling iron set on a low setting. I spray a little hairspray while it is being curled and it actually holds really well. I sit her in the bathroom in a chair and she looks at the mirror acting live a diva!

I have found that if you spray her hair with water first then put the rollers in vertically then hairspray it good...let dry for several hours...maybe 4 or 5 (sometimes I use a blow dryer to speed up the drying)then take the rollers out (unrolling and pulling down so you get that ringlet). Rory is so adorable! I wish my 8 year old would still let me put rollers in her hair.

SO cute!! I curl Malias hair all the time with a tiny curler but before I curl I add some mouse and then some hairspray after and it will stay even through a nap!!
I cant wait to see a pic of her in her new red dress isnt it so dang cute!! I think its awesome she thought Malia was her because there are so many times I think they look so alike!

Have her sleep in them overnight with a winter hat on (an adult one to fit over the curlers) in the morning take off the hat, spray her hair with hairspray and blow dry for a few minutes. Take them out and then spray again once it is styled. That should help :) She is darling!

forgot to add that you can use a light gel or mousse too when her hair is wet and then roll them.

Having JUST lived through this, I second ALL the tips:

1. Roll hair while wet/damp with some mousse on each strip. Roll smaller pieces on smaller rollers (it's gonna fall a bit anyway when you comb it)
2. Spray hair spray ALL over it as it is drying.
3. Roll them tight and either down or sideways.

Our meeting with Dr. W today was fine. Not encouraging, but fine. I don't know why I expected better news, but I think it's hard not to hope that the bad news you hear is somehow wrong; that they've somehow made a mistake. Basically, the cancer is still the same as prior to chemo. Possibly a little larger, but he said it was hard to tell. He was glad that it had not returned to my bowel or colon (because that was a large part of my initial surgery), and my chest and lungs are still clear (apparently, this is the next place the cancer would go). It does not change my stage of cancer (still 3c), and remission is still a possibility, but he said that it would be very tough to get there.  There are several more drugs that we can try, which is good, but unfortunately they each have a success rate of only 25%. It's a little too early to be considering clinical trials because hospitals who hold the trials like for the patients to have tried the more main-stream drugs firs

Late Night Ramblings

1. Thanks to Andrea for driving me to chemo today. I'm always a little anxious on the way in and the very few times I've had to drive myself, it's been a little lonely coming home. But not today. 2. A fellow chemo patient today thought I was in my 20's. Score.  ("score" would be a term I'm borrowing from Becky ) 3. I did not wear a scarf today to chemo, and all the nurses and doctors did a double take since they didn't recognize me. So wierd. I recognize me with hair, bald, and with a little puppy fluff. 4. Dr. W. is adding Avastin , a new drug which will help prevent cancer cells from growing, to my current Gemzar routine. Good news is that it won't make me feel any worse. Bad news is that in a small percentage of patients it causes severe side effects involving blood clots, kidney failure, ulcers, and holes in your bowel. Good times. 5. Scenes from the Soccer Field

So I may not have apologized yesterday about the number of pictures, but I am definitely going to today. Because  coughcough thirty coughcough just might be excessive. And probably my family will be the only ones who look at all of them. But I don't care. :) By the way, we completely lost and did not even score a goal yet again. Rory tried really, really hard. This team was head and shoulders bigger than we are, way more coordinated than 4 year olds should be and their coach kept their A team in the entire game. Even after scoring some 15 goals. Oh, well. Rory still enjoyed herself. Which way is the goal again? Notice her position in this picture. Notice how she passed the girl next to her? No, I am not competitive at all.
