Connections

I never cease to be amazed at who you can meet via social media; the people you come to know and love from afar through the little glimpses they give of themselves. And, if you're lucky, you connect.

Sometimes you connect on topics as fun and trivial as favorite TV shows or music; sometimes it's lamenting how quickly the kiddos are growing; asking for photography advice; navigating the tricky waters of parenting. Sometimes it's over life events that knock you to your knees.

And when the stars align and you get to meet those people in real life? So amazing.

On Wednesday I was blessed to meet Vicky for a morning of coffee and conversation. This lady has become so important to me, and I follow her journey closely. We were diagnosed with cancer only weeks apart, and I am still a little unclear as to how all connections were made, but Becky found her blog and commented. Vicky reciprocated, clicked over to my blog, and we have been in contact since. Vicky was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, and I have found myself rejoicing with her on the good days as well as weeping with her on the bad days throughout the last 2.5 years. Her writing is beautiful and poetic. (A definite contrast to my distinctly unpoetic style.) Her words remind me to be thankful and to see the gifts each day brings.

My favorite thing about meeting Vicky was the opportunity to see her not as a fellow cancer patient, but as a woman, wife, mother, and friend. Considering the fact that she lives 17 hours away, I never imagined sitting with her face to face.

I cracked up as I uploaded the photos. We asked a stranger if they minded taking our picture, and out of the 6 she took, this was about the only one in which our heads weren't completely cut off.

I am sitting at a rest area in Kentucky-squinting and trying to type :) Melissa- this touched me so! You put it all into words that so perfectly described everything meaningful about it. Thank you-and thank you to Becky for creating the dots we just drew into a line. Hugs friend~

Truly wonderful !!
I love this so much!!! You know how I've been feeling about social media lately... so this was a good reminder that it's just as much GOOD as it is bad at times. And, you two are adorable!
Can I start by telling you how envious I am that you got to hug Vicky?? hahaha So thrilled for both of you and Vicky and I have been blogging friends for almost five years (can't beLIEVE that!). Nice to meet you and I'm sorry you and Vicky have cancer in common but I'm sure you've been an amazing encouragement to each other which means so much. The grace of God through our friends in cyberspace - and now real life. Blessings.
